"When a member of the Governing body decides
to leave it can create a knowledge vacuum.
Effective planning can mitigate against
vulnerability in key areas"
Succession Planning & Teamwork. One of the positives of the structure of Governing Boards is that they are made up of a diverse set of volunteers, with different experiences, skills, perspectives and from different professions. However, this also makes developing an effective team challenging, with infrequent meetings, and boards tending not to invest in their own team development, in the same way an employed team would. Boards that invest in their own develop benefit from better succession planning.
Using Shaping Governance helps boards to build the necessary foundations for an effective board: relationships and team working by:
- Getting to know each other better and understanding the skills and attributes they posses;
- Understanding how they can work more effectively together;
- Creating a buzz and excitement, helping all to remember why they became governors!
