As a Special Residential School, we have Social Care responsibilities in addition to our education responsibilities, and are inspected on both. In practice, this means that Governors not only have to understand how to govern a school effectively, they also need to understand how to discharge their oversight of our residential aspects.

I had heard about Shaping Governance and Su’s reputation from colleagues within the region. I therefore wanted to work with Su to get her support in improving governance of my school.

Su ran two events for us; 1) a traditional Shaping Governance session focusing on 9 areas of governance of the school and education; and 2) a specially adapted version of Shaping Governance to help governors to understand and monitor from a residential care perspective.

The traditional session was great, and allowed governors to work through sometimes overlooked and neglected areas of governance of education. It allowed them to look passed the core roles and really get to understand the school, how they govern and where they could make improvements. It was also timely in helping all governors to increase their knowledge and teamwork, and in the appointment of a new Chair.

In the residential workshop, Su helped three schools to understand social care legislation and good governance practice from across her education and social care support; she supported governors to develop key lines of enquiry to support their governing. She then used the product of conversations to create a handbook for each school, which is now being used by governors to ensure children are safe.

Su’s facilitation exceeded my expectations. On both occasions, she led the room skilfully, enabling participation, valuing contribution and guiding colleagues through their own learning journey. Su’s pitch and pace were insightful. All colleagues left the CPD programme with the aims being met, interested in future learning and galvanised to develop their responsibilities as governors.

Su is credible, professional and talented.
